Our boardwalks are open sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week.
March 2010 News
The first Reed Creek Park Chocolate Festival on February 20 was a huge success. Thank you to all the volunteers that made the program run smoothly, and thank you to all the families that came to enjoy chocolate and to support the park. We had a beautiful evening, and the frogs were singing full chorus. We hope to do it again next year!
Adopt A Stream Trainings this spring: Join local volunteer Mike Reardon to learn how you can collect important data each month on the health of a local stream for the state of Georgia. You may register by calling 706-210-4027. Chemical Certification Training: March 27, 2010 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Be prepared to get into a stream (wet boots or old sneakers) for hands on work learning how to test oxygen levels and more in the water of the creek. Macro Biological Certification Training: May 1, 2010 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Be prepared to get into a stream (wading boots or old sneakers) for hands-on insect and other invertebrate collection.

The World of Owls
This time of year owls are more active, so we’ll take a walk outside to talk about owl habitats and survival strategies. We’ll also enjoy some warmer indoor activities to understand what adaptations owls use to survive, and see just what owls eat by examining owl pellets! For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $3/child.
Tuesday, March 2, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Night Walk Join us to explore our wetland at night! We may hear owls or any other nocturnal animals, and we’ll talk about what adaptations these night-time creatures have. For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.
Thursday, March 4, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Nurturing Nature Walks for 3-5 year olds Through the use of songs, movement, and using our senses on an outdoor walk, we help nurture your young child’s curiosity of the natural world. Thursday programs will be the same topic as offered on the Wednesday programs, however, topics will change each month. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Members: free; non-members: $2/child; no charge for adults or for children 2 and under. Please note: this is a family program. If you are interested in a Pre-K walk for a school or day care center, contact our office to schedule a separate field trip.

All about Frogs Join us for this indoor and outdoor program to learn about our local frogs and how we’re studying them through a calling survey at Reed Creek. We’ll go outdoors to listen for frogs using the calling survey protocol. For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Offered free of charge.
Friday, March 12, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. and March 26, 8 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Simply Science Collect creek clay and create your own miniature volcano! Put your hands in ice water without getting them cold! See if your tiny soil dam holds water better than others! This is a program to explore hands-on (and sometimes messy) science. For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child; no charge for adults.

All About Birds We’ll start out inside with a hands on activity to determine avian adaptations, and end things with a birding walk around the wetland with tips on seeing birds and identifying species. Bring your binoculars if you have them! For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.
Tuesday, March 16, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Forest Foray Explore off-trail to different areas beyond the swamp to find signs of animals, clues of habitat change, and big trees. Bring shoes or boots that can get wet and muddy.
