Policy for Public Art Exhibits

I.          Purpose

Artistic exhibits play an integral part in the libraries’ mission of providing for the informational, recreational and educational needs of the community. Exhibits are planned to direct the attention of the public to library resources and to improve the education level and cultural awareness of the community.

II.         General Information

Exhibits run from the first of each month through the end of the month. Artists are responsible for the installation of their own shows, setting up and taking down exhibits in a timely manner. Arrangements for setting up the exhibit should be made in advance with the library. After the exhibit is set up, exhibitors are responsible for obtaining final approval of the exhibit from the libraries. Exhibitors must provide their own transportation of exhibits.

The libraries reserve the right to reject any part of an exhibit if the items are contrary to the libraries’ community responsibility or its standards of value, quality and substance. Final authority for the acceptance or rejection of exhibits rests with the Columbia County Libraries.

III.        Conditions of Exhibits

Exhibitors are responsible for any damage which may be incurred while hanging and dismantling the show and while the show is on display, in transit or in storage. The libraries assume no responsibility or liability for any exhibits that are stolen or damaged when on display or in storage. The libraries carry no insurance to cover such damage and any insurance coverage is the responsibility of the exhibitor.

Exhibitors are responsible for furnishing the library with descriptive information, biographical data and a digital photograph. Photos should be sent as .jpeg email attachments at the time exhibitors request a place on the schedule and no less than 30 days prior to display. If no digital photos are submitted, artwork will not be admitted for display.

All work must be completely dry before displaying. Works on paper such as watercolor, photography or sketches must be matted; mats may be any color. If works are glazed, Plexiglas is preferred but glass is acceptable. If exhibits are to be hung on walls, works must be framed and ready to hang.

All exhibits must be scaled in size and form to be attractively shown in the areas designated for art displays:

Columbia County Library Evans branch

  • display cases in the front lobby, measuring 8'4" wide, 6'9" high, and 1' deep with two shelves of 1' height and two of 2'. Cases are kept locked during a show.
  • five wall areas (7 feet wide each) which have an adjustable hanging system. The wall to the right when entering the building from the front is wall 1, the walls 2 and 3 are between the glass cases (wall 3 has a TV on it), wall 4 is outside the women’s bathroom, and wall 5 is outside the men’s bathroom.

Euchee Creek Library

  • glass cases at measure 2’ deep by 4’ wide and have adjustable height shelves. The cases are kept locked during a show.

No exhibit material may be removed from the exhibit before the end of the exhibition period unless such removal and rearrangement of the display is approved by the libraries.

The libraries shall in no way act as agent for the sale of items from an exhibit. Purchase prices may be inconspicuously and neatly included on the title card for each item at the discretion of the exhibitor. Transactions for the purchase of exhibit items shall be handled directly between the purchaser and the outside exhibitor or his official agent. Such transactions shall not be conducted in the libraries nor will the libraries become involved in sales or acceptance of money.
