Our mission, as part of the Columbia County Recreation Department, is to offer quality customer service to the citizens of Columbia County by striving to enrich their lives by providing opportunities through programs and activities during their leisure time.
 
The boardwalk is open sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week.
 
Fall 2009 News:     

Interested in Volunteering? We are looking for those interested in helping teach school field trips (training provided, of course) and/or help with children's nature clubs. If you are interested or have questions, please 706-210-4027.

Be a Young Naturalist and have your birthday party at Reed Creek Park. Does your child enjoy nature and the outdoors? Then sign up for a birthday party at Reed Creek! With indoor and outdoor games and activities, children will have a chance to explore the natural world. Call 706-210-4027 for more information.

 
Fall Public Programs at Reed Creek Park:

Schools: Interested in a field trip or outreach program? Call our program staff for field trip information. Or we may come to you to lead an outreach workshop. We have lead programs for schools groups, homeschoolers, camp groups, scouts, garden clubs, children’s and adult birthday parties, etc. Call 706-210-4027.

Frog Call Surveys About every other week, Reed Creek Park naturalists listen for frogs at the park during the evening. Two listening surveys are conducted, and the whole process takes about 20 minutes to complete. If you would like to join us on one of these surveys, please call 706-210-4027.

Nurturing Nature Walks for 3-5 year olds

Through our preschool programs, we hope to nurture young people’s curiosity of the natural world with an outdoor walk and outdoor activities. Thursday programs will be the same topic as offered on the Wednesday programs, however, topics will change each month. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Members: free; non-members: $2/child; no charge for adults or for children 2 and under. Please note: this is a family program. If you are interested in a Pre-K walk for a school or day care center, contact our office to schedule a separate field trip.

Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. November 11, and December 9

Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. October 15, November 19, and December 17

Forest Foray

Explore off-trail to different areas beyond the swamp to find signs of animals, clues of habitat change, and big trees. Bring shoes or boots that can get wet and muddy. For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.

Birds

What makes a bird a bird? We’ll talk about avian adaptations such as wings, feathers, beak shape, and feet shape. We’ll also be making a trip outside to go birding – both expert and new birders are welcome to join us! Ages 5 and up. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.

Wednesday, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21

Skulls & Scat

Ever wonder what animal left droppings or paw prints in your backyard? We’ll learn to identify animal species based on their tracks, skulls, and scat (droppings). Definitely the best time you’ll ever have while looking at poop! Ages 5 and up. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.

Tuesdays, 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. Nov. 3 and 17

Wilderness Survival

This is a fun program for those interested in backcountry camping or anyone wanting tips in emergency survival skills. We’ll go over compass- and map-work, what to bring when you go camping, as well as tips on making fires and shelters in the wilderness (without matches and a tent). Ages 10 and up. Pre-registration required. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.

Adopt-a-Stream Training

Join local volunteer Mike Reardon to learn how you can collect important data each month on the health of a local stream for the state of Georgia. You may register by calling 706-210-4027.

Macro Biological Certification Training: November 7, 2009 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Be prepared to get into a stream (wading boots or old sneakers) for hands-on insect and other invertebrate collection.

A Beginner’s Guide to Climate Change

This is an adult program for anyone who would like clarity on the science of climate change. The technical, scientific side of global warming will be discussed, because it’s important that everyone – scientist or not – be informed about such a politically-charged issue. Free.

Night Walk

Join us for a walk around the wetland at night. We’ll be looking mostly for bats, owls and any other fauna that might stop by! Ages 5 and up. Members: free; non-members: $2/child.

Phase I of the Wetlands Park included:   

   * 300 foot boardwalk over wetlands
   *  concrete sidewalks
   *  interpretive signage
   *  new wetland trees and vegetation 
   *  25 space parking lot
