Letter from the Chairman

Post Date:03/18/2020 11:18 AM

From the Desk of:
Douglas R. Duncan, Jr.
Chairman of the Board of Commissioners

March 18, 2020

I would like to reassure the citizens of Columbia County that they have the support of myself, the Board of Commissioners, and County Administration throughout the time frame of county office, park, and facility closures. The county’s Emergency Operations Center will remain staffed with mission critical personnel and will continue to accept calls through the county’s 311 center.

Public safety is at the fore-front of my mind, along with the rest of the Board of Commissioners and County Administration. I encourage citizens to continue to call 911 for any emergency situation, and for non-emergency situations, call dispatch at 706-541-2800. For general county-related questions, citizens should call 311.

Although, we are encouraging social distancing, I ask that citizens continue to support local businesses. Many of you are playing it smart by choosing to stay home, but I also ask that you consider utilizing drive-thru, curbside and delivery services. The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau have provided a list of local businesses still open and ready to serve you. You can view their list by visiting their websites.

In addition, I encourage citizens to be prepared, but please try to avoid panic shopping and hoarding of essential items. If you have a large supply of essential items, consider sharing them with your neighbor or donating them to a local nonprofit like Golden Harvest Food Bank, the Augusta Dream Center or local churches.

It is my goal, along with my fellow Commissioners and County Administration, to bring the community together during this time and reassure the citizens we will get through this public health emergency and come out stronger.

Wishing you and your family good health,
Douglas R. Duncan, Jr.
