Marriage License

Licenses are issued Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Things you will need to bring:

  • ID for each Person*
  • Certified Copies of Divorce Papers if you have been Married
  • Certified Copy of Death Certificate if you are Widowed

* Acceptable forms of ID: A government issued ID such as Drivers License, State ID, Military ID, or Passport.

INFORMATION YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW ON YOUR APPLICATION:

  • Parents Birth Place (City and State)
  • Mother's Maiden Name
  • The Bride's full name after Marriage (Ex: John Alex Smith to Mary Jane Jones to Mary Jane Smith or Mary Jones Smith)
  • Date and place of marriage

The marriage license cost is $56.00 with out Premarital Counseling or $16 with Premarital Counseling Certificate.
MUST BE CASH, MONEY ORDER OR MASTER CARD/VISA WITH A CONVENIENCE FEE

After you are married you can obtain a CERTIFIED COPY OF THE MARRIAGE LICENSE in person or online. The cost is $10 per copy. You will need this to change your social security card and drivers license. 

This court never issues a marriage certificate.

 


Georgia Weapons Carry License

Licenses are issued Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

In order to apply for a Georgia Weapons Carry License you must:

  • Be a resident of Columbia County
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • If you have completed basic training in the armed forces and can provide proof that he or she is actively serving or has been honorable discharged from the armed forces you may apply between the ages of 18 to 21.

Things you will need to bring:

  • Georgia license showing your current Columbia County address. If you have a P.O. Box on your license you must provide a utility bill with your street address
  • $74.75 Cash, Money order or Master Card/Visa with a convenience fee

If you are Military:

  • You will need to bring a picture ID
  • A Utility bill with your current address
  • Orders showing that you are stationed in Georgia

To renew your permit:

  • Georgia license showing your current Columbia County address. If you have a P.O. Box on your license you must provide a utility bill with your street address
  • You will need your old permit
  • The cost is $30.00 Cash, Money order or Master Card/Visa with a convenience fee.

A renewal constitutes a current Georgia Weapons Carry License or a license that is expired less then 30 days.

Traffic Citations

The Probate Court of Columbia County handles traffic citations issued by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Department of Motor Carrier's, and the Department of Natural Resources.

How to Dispose of a Traffic Citation:

  • Wait at least seven days to inquire of the amount of your bond.
  • We accept CASH MONEY ORDERS OR VISA/MASTER CARD WITH A CONVENIENCE FEE.
  • You can mail it to
    P.O. Box 1520
    Evans, GA 30809
  • Please include correct name, address, date of citation issued and citation number if known when mailing your payment.
  • NO PERSONAL OR BUSINESS CHECKS ACCEPTED!! Checks received will be returned and the traffic citation is handled as a non-payment.
  • You may pay on line at EZ Court Pay or call 1-800-262-0128. To do so you must have your citation number, date of birth and the Jurisdiction is Columbia County.
  • If you do not pay your citation on or before your court date your driver's license will be subject to being sent in for SUSPENSION after the court date.

Out-of-State Violators

Georgia is a member of the Interstate Driver's License Compact. If you are from a state that also participated in the compact, your state will recognize a ticket issued to you in Georgia as if it were issued in your home state. Failing to appear before the Columbia County Probate Court or to pay the traffic fine prior to your appearance date will result in your home state suspending your driver's license until the fines are paid.

Vital Records

To obtain a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate, customers are welcome to visit our office or mail in a request to P.O. Box 525, Appling, GA 30802. Most requests can be processed while you wait; however, the wait time depends on the volume of customers.

Birth Certificate

  • In order to obtain a Birth Certificate, you must be a parent, legal guardian, or temporary guardian
  • Valid ID must be presented in order to obtain a birth certificate.
  • The fee for the first certified copy is $25.00 ($5.00 for each additional copy ordered for the same person at the same time)

Call the Appling office at 706-541-1254 to obtain information on births born at home. These must be done with the first year after birth

Amended or Delayed Birth Certificate

In order to file for a delayed certificate or to amend your current birth certificate (adult only) you must have three of the following documents. Each document must be certified and they should all have the same spelling of your name and same date of birth.

All of the documents should be at least 10 years old and one of the documents should also include your father's full name and your mother's full maiden name.

For females all of the documents must include your maiden name.

The following are suggested examples of the types of documents needed and should not be construed as a complete list:

Your child's birth certificate with your name and age or birthday.

  • Marriage License Application
  • School Records
  • Hospital Records
  • Voter's Registration Application
  • Employment Records
  • Military Record

Once the documents have been compiled, please bring them into the Probate Court office. We will prepare the necessary petition to be filed with Georgia State Vital Records. The time frame is usually 6-8 weeks for State Vital Records to prepare the Delayed Birth Certificate or the Amended Certificate. The fee is $25.00 cash only.

Death Certificate

  • In order to obtain a Death Certificate, you must be a parent, legal guardian, or temporary guardian.
  • Valid ID must be presented in order to obtain a death certificate.
  • The fee for the first certified copy is $25.00 ($5.00 for each additional copy ordered for the same person at the same time).
  • The living legal spouse or next of kin or the legal representative or the person who is good faith has applied and produced a record of such application to become the legal representative of the person whose record of death is registered.

Marriage Certificate

  • Anyone may request a marriage certificate.
  • Fee-$10.00 for each certified copy.

Mail In a Request

To request a BIRTH OR DEATH CERTIFICATE, you will need to send in:

  • Photocopy of your valid driver's license or state issued I.D.
  • Payment - Money Order only
  • Self addressed stamped envelope

To request a MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE, you will need to send in:

  • Payment - Money Order only
  • Self addressed stamped envelope

Guardianship and Conservatorship

Proceedings for the appointment of a guardian and/or conservator for a minor or an incapacitated adult are among the most important and difficult cases tried in Probate Court. These cases are handled by the Probate Court of Columbia County in accordance with the degree of importance given them under law.
